Crispy Baked Tofu Nuggets Recipe

Ingredients

  • 16 oz block firm tofu
  • 2 tbsp avocado oil (or olive oil)
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
  • 2 tsp tapioca starch
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ¾ cup nutritional yeast

Instructions

  • To eliminate the excess water from the tofu, wrap it in a kitchen towel and press it with a cast iron or heavy bottomed skillet. Press it for at least 30 minutes.
  • Make the rub: place the olive oil, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, tapioca starch, salt, and pepper in an airtight container and mix until combined.
  • Cut the dried out tofu into 1-inch squares and add them to the rub mix. Shake the container until all the cubes are well coated with the rub.
  • Place the nutritional yeast in a zipper bag or shallow dish. Coat the tofu squares completely and evenly with the nutritional yeast.
  • Place them in the basket of your air fryer and fry them for 12 mins at 375 F. Do not overcrowd the basket. You might need to make them in batches.

Notes

  1. The tofu should be as dry as possible, so press it at least 30 minutes to ensure you extract the most amount of liquid.
  2. If you can’t fit all the tofu squares into your air fryer in one layer, fry them in batches.
  3. Don’t skip the nutritional yeast. It makes the nuggets crispy and flavorful.
