Ingredients You’ll Need:

To make this gooey hamburger potato casserole you will need the following ingredients:

  • Lean ground beef
  • Yellow onion
  • Russet potatoes
  • Butter
  • All-purpose flour
  • Milk
  • Paprika
  • Dry parsley
  • Mustard powder
  • Shredded cheddar cheese

You can use Yukon Gold potatoes and the milk of your choice.

How To Make Hamburger Potato Casserole?

This ground beef and potato casserole comes together quickly by following these steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and cook the hamburger with the chopped onion until no pink is left and most of the liquid has evaporated. Season with salt and pepper and transfer to a bowl.
  2. In the same skillet, melt the butter and add the flour. Cook the flour for about two minutes and whisk in the milk.
  3. Cook until thick and add the paprika, dried parsley, mustard powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar.
  5. Place a layer of sliced potatoes in the bottom of a 9×11-inch casserole dish.
  6. Spoon half of the cooked ground beef evenly over the potatoes.
  7. Pour ⅓ of the cheese sauce on top of the meat.
  8. Repeat the layers.
  9. End with one last layer of sliced potatoes and the remaining ⅓ of the sauce.
  10. Sprinkle ½ cup shredded cheddar over the sauce, cover with foil, and bake for 1 ½ hours. Remove the foil for the last 20 mins of cooking.

What Are The Best Potatoes For Hamburger Potato Casserole?

In my opinion, the best baking potatoes are Russet, but I have used Yukon Gold and White potatoes and they work great too. I’ve even been curious to see how Sweet Potatoes would taste in this casserole recipe!

Can I Freeze Ground Beef and Potato Casserole?

Yes, you can! What I like to do is portion it, place each portion in a freezer-safe bag, and freeze it for up to 3 months. That way I can thaw one portion at a time.
