What Goes Into A Cheeseburger Pie?

To make this creative alternative to a cheeseburger, you will need:

  • Using lean ground beef is my preference (above 90% lean), but if you can’t find it, just drain the excess fat after cooking it. This will reduce the calories in the dish, making it healthier.
  • Finely chopped onion because who likes to bite into a big chunk of onion? Especially if you’re feeding kids!
  • Diced red bell pepper gives this dish a sprinkling of color as well as great flavor. You can use yellow, orange, or green bell pepper as well.
  • Shredded sharp cheddar cheese or your favorite melty cheese. You can use American cheese, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or a mixture of these.
  • Bisquick mix is the ingredient that binds all other ingredients together. It gives the pie its body and texture.
  • Eggs make this pie light and fluffy. Use big, room-temperature eggs.
  • Milk. Use the milk of your choice. You can use whole milk, 2%, skim, or plant-based milk.
  • Paprika, dried parsley, salt, and pepper to season the pie. You can use freshly chopped parsley if you have it on hand. Add any herbs you have like Italian seasoning. Anything that adds flavor.

How Long Does It Take To Make Cheeseburger Pie?

It takes about 40 minutes to make this dish if you follow these instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 F
  2. Brown the ground beef along with the chopped onion, diced bell pepper, paprika, parsley, salt, and pepper in a large skillet over medium-high heat until fully cooked. Transfer the meat mixture to a pie dish.
  3. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar evenly over the meat.
  4. Whisk together the bisquick mix, milk, and eggs in a bowl (don’t worry if a few lumps remain), and pour this mixture over the meat and cheese.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Need to feed a crowd? Double the ingredients and use a 9×13-inch baking dish. Add 5-10 minutes to the baking time.

Make Ahead and Storage Instructions

You can prepare the beef mixture up to 2 days in advance. Place it in an airtight container and store it in the fridge. When ready to bake, just add the Bisquick mixture and pop it in the oven.

It’s also a great idea to freeze the entire unbaked pie for up to 3 months. When ready to cook, thaw it overnight in the fridge and bake as usual. Just add a few minutes to the baking time.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days and reheat individual slices in the microwave for 1-2 minutes or place the entire pie in a 325 F oven for 20-30 minutes until heated through.

Pro Tips For Making The Best Cheeseburger Pie:

  1. Don’t overmix the batter or your pie could make the crust tough. A few lumps in the Bisquick are ok.
  2. Let the pie rest and cool down for about 10 minutes before slicing it for cleaner cuts.

Toppings and Garnishes:

  • Use your favorite burger toppings like lettuce, pickles, and tomatoes.
  • Add crunchy toppings like fried onions or crushed potato chips.
  • Drizzle with ketchup or mustard for that authentic cheeseburger taste.

Substitutions and Variations:

  • Make it Italian by adding diced tomatoes, minced garlic, and oregano to the meat mixture and using mozzarella cheese instead of cheddar.
  • Make it Mexican, taco style by adding chopped jalapenos, diced tomatoes, chili powder, and cumin to the meat mixture and using shredded Mexican blend cheese.
  • Add sliced black olives, pepperoni slices, mozzarella cheese, and tomato paste, and make it a crustless pizza-hamburger pie.
  • If you don’t have Bisquick, you can use pancake mix (it will be a tad sweet), or Jiffy Baking Mix.
  • For a lighter version, use ground turkey or chicken instead of ground beef. You can also use a low-fat cheese or a reduced-fat biscuit mix.
  • Feel free to use different cheeses like Monterey Jack, Swiss, or Pepper Jack in the same amount.
  • Add extra veggies like one cup of sliced mushrooms or zucchini to the beef mixture before baking.
