In my opinion, everything tastes better with a crunchy coating. Fish is one of those things that to me, tastes better with a crunchy coating! And boy is this fish crispy on the outside but tender and flaky on the inside. All it needs is a drizzle of lemon juice!

To make this extra-crispy recipe, you need:

  • Catfish filets
  • Buttermilk
  • Egg
  • Brown mustard
  • Hot sauce
  • Cornmeal
  • Salt
  • Paprika
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Dill
  • Garlic powder
  • Black pepper
  • Oil for flying

How Can I Make My Fried Catfish Extra Crispy?

To make this extra-crispy fried catfish recipe, follow these instructions:

  1. Make the batter by whisking the buttermilk, egg, mustard, and hot sauce together.
  2. Marinate the filets in the batter for at least 30 mins.
  3. Make the crispy coating: in a shallow dish mix together the cornmeal, paprika, cayenne pepper, dill, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Remove each filet from the marinade, shaking off the excess, place it in the dish with the breading, and coat it on both sides.
  5. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, fry the filets until golden brown on both sides, about 3 minutes on each side.

Ingredients

  • 4 catfish files
  • ¼ cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp brown mustard
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp dill
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • tsp Vegetable oil for frying

Notes

  1. Remove the excess batter from the filets before breading them.
  2. The oil has to be hot before you place the filets in the skillet.
  3. Check the oil by dropping a few crumbs of breading into it. If they sizzle, the oil is ready for frying.
